Background: Anaemia in pregnancy
has rippling health effects on mothers and babies. Iron supplementation during pregnancy is essential in reversing
the situation. The study was carried out to
assess factors influencing compliance with iron supplementation among
pregnant women in the Wa East District of Ghana.
Methods: A community based
descriptive cross-sectional survey design was adopted to study pregnant women aged 15 to 49 years, who were residents of the area and were within a gestational period
of 36 weeks. Simple random sampling was used
to derive the sample.
Results: The mean age of
respondents was 28.5 (±7.5) with a minimum age of 16 years and a maximum age of 47 years.
Fifty-four-point one percent (54.1%) of the respondents had their HB level below 10.5 g/dl. Forty-seven-point six
percent (47.6%, 170/357) of the study
respondents comply with iron supplement. Factors that were associated with the compliance of iron supplement intake were;
side effect, counselling, forgetfulness, family support, fed up and
knowledge on IFA and anaemia
Conclusion: This study found a
high prevalence of anemia among pregnant women
suggesting more work needs to be done to reduce it to acceptable
limits. Also, compliance rate with iron supplement intake among pregnant
women 15-47 years was found to be low. Predictors of compliance could be exploited to address the high prevalence of anaemia.
