DETERMINANT OF MALE INVOLVEMENT IN ANTENATAL CARE IN TAIN DISTRICT, BONO REGION, GHANA
Abstract:

Utilization of ANC ensures a reduction of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality through early detection and prevention of complications in pregnancy that are anticipated risks of complications during labour and delivery. Male involvement during antenatal care is an influential strategy for women utilization of ANC. Hence, this study sought to determine the factors associated with the involvement of males in antenatal care service in the Tain District of the Bono Region of Ghana. A cross-sectional study design was employed with quantitative approach to data collection. A systematic sampling method was used to select 244 men aged 18 years and above, and were interviewed using a structured questionnaire to collect the data. Data were pre-coded, and keyed into Microsoft excel spreadsheet 2019 version and then transported into STATA version 12.1 for the analysis. Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. All frequencies and percentages generated were presented into tables, pie charts and bar graphs, and tested using Pearson Chi-square (X2) at a significant level of 5% (p≤ 0.05). Results showed that average age was 33.25 years, and 81.6% have ever heard of ANC, and 51.8% heard about ANC through health workers. About 47.1% had average knowledge of ANC, 34% had poor knowledge and only 18.9% had good knowledge on ANC services. Men involvement in ANC showed 52.9% have ever accompanied their wives to ANC clinic, with 51.2% providing high level of involvement support to their wives during pregnancy in ANC. Associated factors influencing males’ involvement in ANC were; occupation, place of residence, sources of information about ANC, ever discussed ANC with wife, ever had health education on ANC, and mean of transport to ANC clinic. Conclusively, men knowledge about ANC was low as less than 20% had good knowledge and a third had average knowledge on ANC services, with overall level of involvement of male partners in ANC services been a little more than half. Therefore, healthcare workers should intensify health education to improve men knowledge regarding ANC services and the need for their involvement in ANC services.
