FACTORS INFLUENCING PREVALENCE OF HYPERTENSION AMONG HEALTHCARE WORKERS IN KORLE BU POLYCLINIC
Abstract:

Hypertension, a chronic condition characterized by elevated blood pressure, poses a significant public health challenge globally. Healthcare workers (HCWs), due to demanding work schedules, shift work, and exposure to stressful environments, are considered a population at increased risk for this condition. Evidence suggested that while genetic predispositions play a role, lifestyle choices contribute to considerable influence in the onset and progression of this high blood pressure. In the Korle Bu Polyclinic, healthcare workers (HCWs) were exposed to significant stress-related risk factors.  It is in this light that the primary objective of this study was to assessed the factors influencing the prevalence of hypertension among healthcare workers in the Korle-Bu Polyclinic. The study used a quantitative research methodology to accomplish its objectives by gathering data from a total of 160 Health Care Workers (HCWs). The participants' responses were encoded for analysis using SPSS. Mean and standard deviations were used to describe the continuous variables and percentages to describe categorical variables. Binary logistic regression was used to examine the factors associated with hypertension. The results showed that 28.8% were identified as hypertensive. The analysis of determinants of hypertension among healthcare workers (HCWs) at the Korle Bu Polyclinic revealed age as a significant predictor of hypertension. Additionally, HCWs earning above 2000 Ghc and those aged 40 years and above showed higher prevalence rates, consistent with established risk factors for hypertension. The findings underscore the critical role of socio-economic factors in shaping health outcomes among healthcare workers. The study recommends that the Korle Bu Polyclinic implements comprehensive wellness programs targeting hypertension prevention and management among HCWs. Also, healthcare facilities should prioritize preventive measures targeting hypertension among HCWs, particularly focusing on older individuals who may be at higher risk.
